Are you aware that about 40 percent of Asian diabetic patients with hypertension eventually develop kidney disease, 10 percent of these patients will require dialysis within 10 years of diagnosis? And, only 25 percent of these dialysis patients will survive for 5 or more years from the time of initial diagnosis of their kidney ailment.

Both high blood sugar levels and hypertension increase the risk of kidney failure for diabetics. Presence of protein in urine is the earliest sign of kidney disease.

On the other hand, hypertension is also a risk factor for non-diabetic kidney disease and contributes to kidney failure. Apparently, high blood pressure increases the pressure within the kidney filter, leading to its damage and to the leakage of protein in the urine. A substance presented in the blood stream and in the tissues, known as angiotensin II, contributes to hypertension-related damage and scarring in the kidney.

Hence, blocking the effects of angiotensin II by drugs is an important part of the treatment of hypertension and kidney disease. Basically, there are 3 approaches to the treatment of hypertension and diabetic kidney disease:

1. controlling the patient’s blood sugar to bring it to normal levels,

2. reducing blood pressure to optimal levels,

3. blocking the effects of angiotensin II.

These approaches are most effective when used together. Intensive treatment to achieve normal blood sugar levels through oral drugs insulin, a strict low-carbohydrate diet, avoidance or cession of smoking, regular exercise and maintenance of a healthy body weight can reduce the risk of diabetic kidney disease.

It has been shown that control of hypertension can slow down the progress of kidney disease. Maximum benefit can be achieved when the patient’s blood pressure is below 130/80 mmHg. This target blood pressure level can be maintained usually with more than one type of blood pressure lowering drug. Two classes of drug, Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), have been shown to prevent or slow down kidney failure independent of their effects on blood pressure. When used early in the treatment of hypertension, these two drugs show their effectiveness in eliminating protein in the urine and preventing the onset of diabetic kidney disease.

It is mandatory for all diabetic patients to have urine testing for protein in order to detect the onset of kidney disease in its early stages. Furthermore, the lowering of blood cholesterol to normal levels, avoidance or cession of smoking, aspirin therapy and regular exercise are likely to prevent death from heart attack or stroke among these patients.

1) The American Diabetes Association’s general exercise recommendations for people with type 2 diabetes include at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 90 minutes of intense aerobics each week, spread out over at least three days. It also recommends strength training on three days each week.

2) U.S. researchers reported recently that soy yogurt, especially with fruit in it, may help control both type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The researched studied certain plant compounds that affect enzymes targeted by diabetes drugs, notably alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase.

3) Researchers from New Zealand’s Auckland University of Technology found that combining resistance training (e.g. weight lifting) with aerobic workouts appears to be the most beneficial for type for long-term control of blood sugar control than either form of exercise alone. Exercise is an important part of therapy for type 2 diabetes since physical inactivity increases diabetes risk.

4) An effective management of Type 2 Diabetes includes a close attention to a balanced diabetes diet with regular exercise. The diet must consist of the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. A high fiber with low salt and sugar regime would be very useful.

5) A good exercise includes brisk walking or cycling for about 20 to 30 minutes each day for about three days a week. A proper diet with adequate exercise should allow you to control both your weight and blood sugar. Sugar level should be measured and monitored regularly. Alternative treatments of diabetes are currently being researched in many countries around the world. There is research being done on natural substances that help alleviate many of the symptoms of Type-2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease where the body is not able to metabolize glucose in the blood. Type-1 diabetes is caused by the damage of Beta islet cells located in the pancreas. When working properly these cells usually secrete insulin but for people with Type-1 diabetes these cells are not working. Type-1 diabetics will need to be on insulin therapy for the rest of their lives. Type-2 diabetes is cause by the destruction of insulin receptors on cell surfaces which causes the cells to be resistant to insulin. Type-2 diabetes can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication and in some cases with lifestyle changes alone. There are also many alternative or natural substances that can help alleviate symptoms and control blood glucose levels for Type-2 diabetes.

Currently studies are being conducted on many herbs that have been used for centuries to treat diabetic symptoms. There are several Amazon jungle root herbs with reported abilities to lower blood glucose levels, normalize the frequency of urination, and eradicate glucose in the urine of diabetic patients. This seems to help reduce the symptoms caused by the narrowing of blood vessels in the legs, eyes and other areas in the body of diabetics.

Another natural substance that is being studied is cocoa. A study conducted in Germany showed cocoa with high flavanol improves cardiovascular health. The study was specifically to test the effectiveness of the cocoa with long term use. 41 stable Type-2 diabetics were given cocoa with high dose flavanol in comparison with low flavanol dosage cocoa. During the study, the researchers did find that the flavanol found in cocoa did have a positive effect on FMD response in diabetics. Researchers concluded that these results happened by increased production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a chemical that sends signals to arteries to relax and widen in response to increased blood flow. This relaxation of the arteries takes stress off the heart and blood vessels.

Diabetes affects anywhere from 5 to 10% of the U.S. population. Usually, the diagnosis marks the beginning of a lifetime regimen of going to doctors, taking medications, and continually monitoring their blood glucose levels. With a recent discovery, however, researchers now believe that they are one step closer to a diabetes type 1 cure.

The discovery revolves around the 12-Lipoxygenase enzyme, also known as 12-LO, and the gene that produces it. The studies seem to conclusively prove an undeniable link between 12-LO and diabetes.

This link begins with the pancreas. One of the most important functions of the pancreas is to produce the insulin and glucagon needed to control glucose levels in your body. In patients with type 1 diabetes, however, it appears that 12-LO destroys beta cells in the pancreas. The pancreas is unable to produce insulin and the blood glucose levels in the body become elevated to dangerous levels. In other words, without these beta cells, diabetes is the result.

Realizing this, researchers determined that one key to a diabetes type 1 cure might be to find a way to prevent 12-LO from destroying these beta cells. The evolutionary method that the researchers at the Strelitz Diabetes Center have come up with is to block 12-LO using a form of gene therapy.

The EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center, located in East Virginia, provides care for those suffering from diabetes. In addition, it has a research arm that is focused and dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. It is their staff that made the link between 12-LO and diabetes by studying donated human beta cells. Their research on the human cells have proven that the enzyme is the cause of beta cell destruction in humans as well as in mice.

Following this discovery, the researchers then focused on using gene therapy to control the 12-LO enzyme. Thus far the studies have been limited to mice. In these mice, they deleted the gene that produces the 12-LO enzyme. The results were nothing short of amazing. When the gene was deleted, the 12-LO enzyme was no longer produced. With the production of the enzyme halted, the diabetes stopped and the blood sugar in the mice returned to normal levels.

Scientists have already proven that deleting the the 12-LO gene in mice can prevent them from coming down with type 1 diabetes. Studies have also proven that deleting this gene in mice with diabetes can essentially reverse or cure the disease. So now the research moves towards finding a way to effectively target the 12-LO enzyme in humans the same as has been done in mice. If successful, new treatments can be created that can halt the damage to cure the disease at its inception.

Caution is advised, however, since past studies on mice have proven that just because a treatment works on mice does not mean that it will be effective on humans. Even so, experiments on mice are where eventual cures and treatments are first proven to be effective. And it can be looked on as nothing more than a positive sign of things to come.

“Both the blood glucose and insulin were better managed after the meal when they consumed vinegar,” says Johnston, “It appears that the vinegar mimics the action of both acarbose [generic Precose] and metformin [generic Glucophage], which are two of the commonly prescribed medications for diabetics.” Johnston suspects it’s the acetic acid in the vinegar that helps with diabetes control. “The acetic acid in vinegar may inhibit enzymes that digest starch, so that carbohydrate molecules aren’t available for absorption”, she theorizes.

In a follow up study, participants with type 2 diabetes who did not require insulin injections but were taking oral diabetes medications were given either 2 tablespoons of vinegar or water with an ounce of cheese before going to bed. Those given the vinegar at saw their fasting blood sugar levels reduced an average 4% the next morning. Those with the highest fasting blood sugar levels achieved the most benefit, experiencing a drop of 6%.

In the most recent study, researchers concentrated on the effects of vinegar on healthy participants. They fed both healthy participants and diabetics a standard evening meal, and then a breakfast high in complex carbohydrates with or without vinegar following an overnight fast.
